200gsm cotton, and what that actually means
What does 200gsm mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre: what one square metre of the fabric weighs before anyone cuts a t-shirt out of it. Our .blank tee is 200gsm cotton, which is about 5.9 oz per square yard.
GSM describes the cloth, not the finished shirt, so every size is 200gsm even though a bigger shirt weighs more.
180 vs 200 vs 220
- 180gsm (5.3 oz). The standard printed tee. Light, drapes close to the body.
- 200gsm (5.9 oz). Ours. Holds its shape, stays opaque, still wearable in an Australian summer.
- 220gsm (6.5 oz). Heavyweight. Structured and boxy, warmer to wear.
Heavier is not better, it is thicker. 200 is the weight that keeps its shape through a wash without becoming a winter-only shirt.
How to check the GSM of any t-shirt
Cut a 10 cm by 10 cm square from the body of the shirt, weigh it on a scale that reads to 0.1 of a gram, and multiply by 100.
A 10 cm square is one hundredth of a square metre, so a true 200gsm fabric reads about 2.0 g. Works on any tee you already own.

On the scale, whole: M 197 g, L about 217 g, XL 240 g.
A finished shirt weighs a little more per square metre than its fabric does, because folded hems, collar ribbing, the reinforced neckline and labels all add grams.
